Male Breast Reduction

Male Breast Reduction / Gynaecomastia

Who would consider gynaecomastia surgery?

Men who have developed male breast enlargement (gynaecomastia) may consider breast reduction or gynaecomastia surgery. This condition typically develops in adolescence and causes an overproduction of fat tissue in the chest.

Gynaecomastia is commonly caused by an imbalance between hormones. Occasionally some medical conditions or medications may also cause male breast enlargement.

What does gynaecomastia surgery involve?

Gynaecomastia surgery involves the removal of excess breast tissue and skin. Different techniques may be used depending on your breast size and shape. In mild cases, liposuction may be used alone. In moderate and severe cases surgical excision of breast tissue and skin may also be required.

It is performed under general anesthesia and usually results in a 1 – 2 day hospital stay.

Most patients return to low-demand work by 2 weeks. It is advised that strenuous activities be avoided for 6 weeks following the surgery.

What results can I expect?

  • After surgery temporary bruising, swelling and tenderness may occur
  • The scars on the breast usually fade over 6-12 months, but they will remain somewhat visible
  • Results are variable between patients according to their body type and treatment plan

The potential complications and risks will be discussed in detail with you at your consultation with Dr Pyragius.
